Pupil and Eco Councils

The pupils and staff in Carmyllie School feel that it is very important for everyone in the school to be consulted about the issues that affect them.
So that we could consult each other properly, we formed two councils- a pupil council and an eco-council. Our pupil council is made up of the Head Teacher, 2 pupils who represent the primary 1-3 class and 3 pupils who represent the primary 4-7 class. Our pupil council aim to meet once every four weeks and discusses current school issues. The pupil representatives then feed back information to the rest of their class.
So far, some of the things that our pupil council members have discussed at meetings include: the school development plan; the school rewards system; new extra-curricular activities and clubs; charity fund raising and consultation on new school improvements.
One of our most recent projects has been the development of our school playground. The Pupil Council have worked closely with Mr Christie, active schools coordinator, to select new equipment for the playground. We have also put in for a Awards for All bid and have been given £5000 to create a climbing wall. As well as things to do in the playground, the Pupil Council have also discussed playground behaviour with the Headteacher, PSA and Active Schools Coordinator. A new behaviour system for the playground has been put in place and is working well
The Eco Council is made up of pupils from the school, the school janitor, the playground supervisor and the Headteacher. They discuss issues of environmental importance and have secured a recycling point at the school as well as raising the profile of these issues within the school and wider community. They are also working closely with the Parent Council to develop the school grounds and the new Eco Room.
All council meetings have an agenda and minutes and these are kept on the relevant notice boards so that anyone who would like to read them can do so at their own leisure.
